  • Poetry Successes

My journey …writing and performing poetry

I started by sharing my influences and preferences, before moving on to demystify ‘free form poetry’ for those interesting in trying the genre. I used one of my most recent poems (ARRIVALS) to demonstrate techniques.

  • Delighted to be back presenting at A.W.C.

    Pay back time …

I would never have achieved any poetic success without gaining expertise and encouragement from workshops at the Club in the past, so it was lovely - and amazing - to be able to encourage others!

  • Advice and Inspiration

    It’s competition time …

At the end of the session, we did a bit of brainstorming about ideas on the theme of LOST AND FOUND, having done some free writing as a warm up exercise. Thank you to all who came and contributed - it was an honour.

 3rd NON-FICTION

SOCIAL HISTORY WORKSHOP

8th February 2023

Bringing the Past to Life in

Non-fiction Articles

  • Workshop for AYR WRITERS

Following on from speaker Michael Meighan, last week, who talked about his books on the history of Scottish places, I focused on the variety of source materials which can be used for articles.

  • The perfect quote to sum this up!

So many of my published articles have sprung from chance finds of documents, newspapers, letters, photos or artefacts, all of which could easily have been disposed of at any moment.

  • Top tips for researching your project ...

It is astonishing the amount of information now available online, without ever having to leave the comfort of your own home!

  • Time to get scribbling!

AYR WRITERS’ workshops are about picking up tips, but also about getting the chance to experiment. I set members 2 challenges to have a go at writing historical non-fiction piece, under pressure - only 7 minutes allowed.

  • A recent publication...

I shared some of the historical, non-fiction articles I’ve had published, with an explanation of the process from ‘idea to article’.

  • Presentation ready!

Behind me is a Victorian playbill for a night’s entertainment, for charity, in 1884, about which I wrote an article.

My great grandfather’s name is in the cast list of the event held in the Royalty Theatre, Glasgow, which no longer exists.

 NON-FICTION SOCIAL HISTORY

WORKSHOP (1)

  Bringing the Past to Life

I was delighted to share tips, on my journey to publication, with AYR WRITERS’ CLUB, without whom my writing adventure would never have happened.

The workshop, which I presented via Zoom in February 2021, covered all aspects of writing historical non-fiction, aimed to inspire and give tips to those interested in this genre, whether writing short or long form pieces.

I encouraged members to bring along artefacts and historical texts to use in writing exercises. Members’ contributions proved fascinating, and ideal material to write about.

Below are PowerPoint slides of some of the areas discussed.
